Safe disposal of an old radioactive source at Carlsberg

Carlsberg is not only known for world-class beer, but also for a strong tradition of research and innovation. In the heart of Copenhagen—specifically in the historic Carlsberg district—its research facilities are located amid cobblestone streets and the iconic elephants at the Elephant Gate. Work here spans everything from ingredient development to advanced analytical equipment, and it was in this very environment that a radioactive source was discovered during a clean-up in an older laboratory section.

The challenge

Carlsberg wanted to dispose of the discovered source responsibly. It had been unused for many years, and there was a need to assess whether there was a health risk and how the source should be handled correctly and legally. To send the source for decommissioning via the Danish Decommissioning (DEKOM) in Roskilde, documentation was required, including dose rate and an assessment of the isotope type.

We supported Carlsberg by carrying out the necessary measurements and preparing a measurement report that DEKOM needed in order to accept the source. Our work ensured that Carlsberg could proceed with the process—with peace of mind.

The solution

We initiated the collaboration with a thorough dialogue, during which we received photos and information about the source encapsulation and its location. This gave us a solid understanding in advance and made it possible to prepare relevant measurements and assessments before we arrived on site:

  • We carried out precise measurements of radiation levels around the radioactive source
  • The company received a report with dose measurements
  • General advice and dialogue regarding risks associated with handling the source.

All of this together created reassurance in what was otherwise an unfamiliar situation for Carlsberg.
